Running the Walk
Who said Dubai is not runner friendly? You might think running in the dessert is way too hot and not fun at all? Then you really have to try it! Around Le Royal Meridien we have fantastic routes for the ambitious runners amongst our guests.
Sure, the Caracalla Spa with its two gyms, one for teenagers and one for adults, offers a great selection of state-of-the-art treadmills with a scenic view over our lush green gardens but is it not way nicer to combine your sightseeing with the daily workout? We tested three outdoor routes for you:
The direct beach access at Le Royal Meridien brings us to a great beach strip at the Jumeirah Beach. The soft and even ground is fun to run on and additionally trains the muscular system in the legs and strains the spine less with the shock absorbing properties of the sand. Also, the ocean cools down the air around the beach with a sea breeze every jogger will appreciate. If you prefer to run on asphalt, there are two running tracks with glorious views at the iconic Dubai Marina, which is at the footstep of our sister hotel Grosvenor House and has easy access from Le Royal Meridien. This track is not only fun to run along with the impressive skyline but there are so many fellow runners to meet. The total track distance is 5.02 miles, it takes 1 hour 40 minutes to run it and burns 722 calories.
Should almost two hours be too much for you we have a second track to recommend: the JBR, also known as The Walk or Jumeirah Beach Walk. It starts at Le Royal Meridien and offers a straight and wide paved precinct with many shops and cafes to explore. Nice about the JBR is the whole work out concept it comes with. There is a running friendly rubber road stretching along the beach area and also a combination of various training tools such as bench presses and leg trainers to make your work out more fun than ever. It is an open air gym and completely for free. The route along the Walk is 2.2 miles long, takes 40 minutes to run and burns 320 calories.
Dubai’s weather is lovely for outdoor running, forget the paining breaths at home in the cold air. For eight months a year the climate in Dubai is a wonderful 22 – 29 degrees on average, during the summer months temperatures can reach way higher ranges, the mornings however are still moderate enough to enjoy a good run outside.
To say it with the words of Dubai’s’ Nike Run Club: “If you can run a lap, run a mile. If you can run a mile, run a race. Run two. Run faster. Run further. GO!”
